How to Reset Your Heater
As a homeowner, it’s important to know how to troubleshoot your furnace when a situation arises. Here we’ll explain the different types of furnaces and how to reset them.
Pro Tip: All Furnaces Have a Reset Button
No matter which type of furnace you have, they are all equipped with a reset button. They are typically red or yellow and can be found inside the blower compartment. When a problem is detected, the reset button has a safety feature that will completely shut down, preventing the circuit breaker from tripping.
How to Reset an Electric Furnace
- Turn off your furnace’s power supply by turning off the breaker in the circuit box.
- Find the reset button (found inside the blower compartment) and press the reset button to reset your furnace.
- If the button is shifted up, press the reset button down
- Return cover to blower compartment
- Turn the power on
How to Reset an Oil Furnace
- Completely turn off the furnace.
- Locate your furnace’s fuel pump (looks like a small black box with fuel lines).
- Find the bleeder valve (located on the side of the fuel pump).
- Place a drip pan underneath the bleeder valve to catch the fuel.
- Turn the furnace back on and rotate the valve a half-turn. This will cause the valve to start bleeding.
- Make sure the fuel does not overflow.
- Press the reset button again. This should restart the furnace.
How to Reset a Gas Furnace
- Ensure the pilot light is out.
- Turn down the thermostat to its lowest setting.
- Turn off the power supply to the furnace.
- Shut off the main gas supply to the furnace.
- Leave the pilot gas supply on.
- Relight the pilot light (hold a lit match to the pilot flame).
- Turn the circuit breaker back on.
- Turn the main gas supply on.
- Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds.
- Raise the temperature on the thermostat.
